ISIS have been defeated in their 'capital' of Raqqa, with flags raised above the public square where the terror group once carried out its brutal beheadings.
US-backed militias in Syria say the jihadists' stronghold has been liberated after a bloody four-month battle and the city is now being searched for land mines and ISIS sleeper cells.

It represents a major defeat for the collapsing extremist group that had proclaimed Raqqa to be the capital of its so-called 'caliphate'. In Syria, it has been forced back into a strip of the Euphrates valley and surrounding desert.
However, the spokesman for the US-led coalition fighting ISIS in the area could only confirm that about 90 per cent of Raqqa had been retaken with pockets of militants still hidden in the war-torn city.
Colonel Ryan Dillon said that with the fall of the city, militants will be denied a 'well spring' that provided planning and support for terror operations in Syria and Iraq and around the world.
Footage emerged today of SDF fighters raising a flag in Al-Naim (Paradise) Square, which until recently ISIS had been using to carry our horrific executions.

A senior Kurdish commander in the city said: 'The group showed off its might in this square. Now it is broken and is chased out of the heart of its alleged capital,' the commander said.

Raqqa fell to ISIS in 2014 and became the de facto capital of their self-styled caliphate.
This morning, a commander said the had been liberated and that combing operations are underway to clear the city of land mines and extremist sleeper cells.
Brigadier General Talal Sillo said that there are no longer clashes going on in the city.
Sillo says a formal declaration will follow befitting 'the fall of the capital of terrorism.
